RIP Tom Alter: Arjun Kapoor, Huma Qureshi, Anil Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor saddened by the actor’s death

Veteran actor Tom Alter who had worked in several films, TV shows and theatre, passed away today morning (September 30). Aged 67, the actor cum writer was battling stage four skin cancer since a few years now. While he had showed signs of recovery initially, he succumbed to the disease today. The news was announced via a statement on behalf of his family, which read: “It is with sadness we announce the death of Tom Alter, actor, writer, director, Padma Shri, and our dear husband and father. Tom passed away Friday night at home with his family and close family members in attendance. We ask for their privacy to be respected at this time.”

Born in Mussoorie in 1950, Alter was a third-generation American staying in India. In 1972, he was chosen from over 800 applicants across India to be enrolled at the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India in Pune. Alter’s debut film was Ramanand Sagar’s Charas (1976), where he played the role of Dharmendra’s boss, a CID official. He is famous for his fantastic act in Satyajit Ray’s Shatranj Ke Khiladi (1977), Shyam Benegal’s Junoon (1979), Manoj Kumar’s Kranti (1981) and Raj Kapoor’s Ram Teri Ganga Maili (1985). On TV, Alter’s impressed one and all with his roles in Junoon, Zabaan Sambhalke, Jugalbandi, Bharat EK Khoj, Ghutan, Shaktimaan, Captain Vyom, Mere Ghar Aana Zindagi and Yahaan Ke Hum Sikandar. The actor had several friends as well as colleagues in the TV industry as well as Bollywood. After hearing this news, several celebrities including Arjun Kapoor, Huma Qureshi, Anil Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor tweeted about the actor’s sudden death. Alter has acted in over 300 movies apart from numerous TV shows too. Alter also ventured into direction and was a sports journalist in the 80’s and 90’s. He was also the first person to interview Sachin Tendulkar, when the cricketer was yet to debut for India. Alter has even written three books and was conferred with the prestigious Padma Shri for his services to the field of arts and cinema in 2008. At the time of his death, Alter has nearly 16 unreleased films lined up as well as a web series by Eros Now. He has acted in several notable plays too. RIP Tom Alter…
